Dana Clark

Dana Clark is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a passion for writing songs that express the subtleties of human emotion and the complexities of personal relationships. Then...there's the philosophical side:  Many of her songs address contemporary global issues facing humanity as a whole. Some of them explore basic existential questions. Her writing is sometimes serious as a heart-attack--sometimes goofy as hell--but it's never boring.

Raised in a musical family, Dana was singing when she was just a few years old. While still a child, she learned to play the piano and flute. In high school, she picked up the guitar and later was able to teach herself mandolin, ukelele, dulcimer, and several different kinds of flutes.

While completing a Masters Degree in Psychology at Southern Illinois University, she developed an extensive repertoire of folk music, accompanying her singing with guitar. Her fascination with the inner workings of the human psyche did not diminish, but her involvement with the music scene continued to deepen until she dropped out of her Ph.D. program, started a rock 'n' roll band, and never looked back!

On the Chicago music scene for ten years, Dana played clubs, coffeehouses, and hotels around the city. She also traveled to perform at more than fifty colleges throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. During those years, she studied piano with Erwin Helfer, legendary for his traditional Chicago blues style, and Skip Green, one of Chicago’s most respected teachers of jazz

Her performance history proves her versatility. She has played in rock bands, country groups, folk duos, jazz groups, as a solo act, and with blues musicians. This has given her the ability to compose in a wide range of styles, allowing her to mold her musical settings to fit the subject matter of her lyrics. Now in San Antonio, she has played house concerts, clubs, and community events, both as a solo performer and with various groups.

Her songs continue to be informed by the keen insight into human behavior provided by the study of psychology. Even the most discriminating of listeners--even music educators--rave about her lyrics. She continues to have a deep concern for the well-being of others that makes her willing to take action on her belief that music is an important tool for personal healing, community building, and full participation in the human experience.

Her recordings include an album and three CDs of original compositions. Samples from her next two CDs are now available. Her songs can be purchased directly from this website.

In addition, she produces short stories, mostly true, mostly humorous, based on her own misadventures in a life that remains...unconventional.

What They're Saying About Dana...

Dana Clark is an outstanding singer/songwriter. You definitely want to get to know her work.  How does one describe her music?  It is the embodiment of her personality, absolutely unique.  You will find her oeuvre to be full of many styles which come from the many facets of her personality.   Her music is either playful, sultry, upbeat, or meditative. She speaks to all of the hopes and fears we are living with today. The lyrics will make you laugh or cry.  If I had to describe her work with one word I would call it, “inspirational”.  DR. SUSAN DILL, MUSIC DEPARTMENT, UTSA.

“If you're having a bad day any day, you should hear Dana Clark make music. Clark is a singer and songwriter who plays piano, flute, and guitar. Her music fuses folk, jazz, blues, and pop. Her song subjects lean toward peace, freedom, compassion, and spirituality. Clark is one of those rare people who not only believes the world can be a better place but works to help the world be a better place. The music on “Trust Your Heart,” created by Clark, bassist/guitarist Kevin Lewis, and percussionist Julie, is varied, but the message is steady. Songs such as “Leap of Faith,” “Most Miracles Are Made” and “Something to Believe” might make curmudgeons cringe, but if those curmudgeons actually listen, they'll have a better day. Believe it.” JIM BEAL, SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS.

“Dana, I can't believe I underestimated the power of what you do. You're just amazing. For someone like me, who comes from a music background, it's that much more amazing. The way you connect with people, gosh, I am almost speechless. And the unique way you can get non-singers to sing, without handouts, eve—I'd never seen that sort of thing work that well before. I am stunned. You have unique talents, PLUS a beautiful voice.” ALYSSA BURGIN, TEXANS FOR PEACE.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Oasis Women's Center, I would like to express our appreciation for your wonderful concert at College Avenue Presbyterian Church on 11th June 2006. Your beautiful songs of peace and love were inspiring and thought-provoking. We appreciate your understanding of the problem of domestic violence in our community and your concern for those who are suffering from abuse.” MARGARET TRUSHEL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, OASIS WOMEN'S CENTER, ALTON, IL.

"Dana Clark sings as she lives: soulfully, hopefully, passionately. Her melodies and messages evoke our own deepest desires for harmony among people of the world. Dana believes in people, in the power of people to rise up, united in positive action. We can believe along with Dana, sing as she sings, and lend our voices for a "World of Justice, World of Peace." LINDA MARTELLA-WHITSETT

"Dana's songs have a spiritual dimension that is universal and certainly not preachy, though her voice is close to being angelic! Her voice delights and brings me back to the Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell times; her gentle sense of humor keeps her real." ART SEVERANCE

"Clark has everything it takes in the vocal department." CHUCK PRATT, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES.

"It took only one listen for her to establish a unique identity. It should be noted that Dana Clark is quite a competent musician as well, playing acoustic and electric piano, acoustic guitar, percussion, and flute." TOM BINGHAM, FOLKSCENE MAGAZINE.

"She is a sensitive and imaginative artist whose original material is meaningful because it comes from the heart." NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY.

"The usually laid-back coffeehouse audience rarely calls a performer back for an encore, but they did for Clark." THE TIMES, MILWAUKEE AREA TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

"You have to admire an artist whose songs can emit a child-like innocence on one track, a sultry, brazen aura on the next, and yet still retain a distinct musical personality throughout." DAN KENING, ILLINOIS ENTERTAINER MAGAZINE.
